The opening week for Joker has been successful both in the box office and also in an unexpected place: fans’ bedrooms.
According to TMZ, recently released metrics by Pornhub reveal that there have been 741,000 searches of “Joker” since the film’s release on Oct. 4. Joker searches have dramatically increased, especially on Sunday when the popular DC Comics character was searched 290,000 times on the porn site.
This is not the first time a comic book character has become trendy on the site. Back in 2016 when the movie Suicide Squad was released, Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn also skyrocketed in searches. Pornhub’s 2018 Year in Review found that Harley Quinn was still the most popular movie or game character on the site. Ten million porn-watchers searched her name in 2018 alone.
Actor Joaquin Phoenix took up the latest iteration of the popular character in the film, which was directed by Todd Phillips. It has already raked in $96 million during its opening weekend, booting Venom off the top spot from its October 2018 earnings rank.
Many were especially enthralled by Phoenix’s take on the popular character. The Hollywood Reporter interviewed several members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who all mostly agreed that Phoenix’s performance was applaudable.
“Phoenix has never been better,” one said. “The way he and the filmmakers handle the transformation from Arthur into Joker is nuanced and masterful. I loved the way they dealt with the ‘unreliable narrator’ aspect of the story, as we learn, bit by bit, what really.”
Hopefully, the actors playing Joker in Pornhub’s videos are equally as spectacular.
