Lesbians masturbate nearly twice as much as straight women, and gay men rub one out just over 16 times per month, according to a new survey.
Bespoke Surgical, a New York City and Los Angeles-based “elite anal surgery practice” for gay men, surveyed just over 1,000 adults in the U.S. about their masturbation habits. The survey found that cis men averaged around 15 masturbation sessions per month, whereas cis women said they touch themselves just under eight times monthly. Meanwhile, straight men masturbated 14.6 times per month, compared to gay men who averaged 16.14 times per month.
Lesbian women reported 10.93 masturbation sessions per month compared to 6.89 sessions per month for straight women.
Trans men and trans women both outranked their cisgender counterparts in self-pleasure, too. Transgender women averaged 8.6 sessions each month, and trans men jerked off an average of 18.6 times in the same timeframe. Surprisingly, genderqueer people masturbated the most per month, pleasuring themselves 23.33 times per month on average. That’s over five times per week. Nonbinary people ranked second with a whopping 20 monthly sessions.
The survey also asked people whether they watch porn while masturbating, and the results seemed to defy gender stereotypes. Over 75% of both straight and gay women said they watch porn to masturbate, even if rarely. Just under 22% of cis women refrained from masturbating to porn, whereas 60% of trans women reported using porn while pleasuring themselves “every time.”
Nearly half of lesbian women reported feeling masturbation was “shameful” growing up compared to just 31% of straight women, suggesting a sizable gap in how queer and straight women learn about their sexualities. Luckily, those feelings seem to decrease with age: Approximately 11% of adult lesbians said they feel masturbation is shameful.
