MindGeek’s Nutaku is getting a new look. Earlier this week, the adult games storefront unveiled its new user interface (UI), complete with search filters, a brand new dark mode, improved performance, and content filters for LGBTQ porn games.
In the upcoming Nutaku redesign, players can add games to a “Favorite Games” tab, search for titles based on their name, genre, and tag, and filter for games based on price and other categories. Nutaku’s new UI also introduces a dark mode built for a much more comfortable late-night browsing experience.
One of Nutaku’s most exciting UI changes includes an LGBTQ content filter. If players want to see games with “Male + Male” content (that is, sex between cis men) or titles focused on transgender characters, they can choose to see just these titles. Players can also filter out certain games—like remove porn games with hetero pairings—and pick multiple filters. For example, players can pick the “Transgender” and “Female + Female” filter to see lesbian porn games with trans women.
When Nutaku launched in 2015, its website was built for just a small assortment of free browser games. Today it has over 375 titles across PC, mobile, and browsers, and the site ballooned from 1 million registered users at the tail end of 2015 to over 35 million in August 2019. Nutaku’s female userbase and LGBTQ demographics have particularly increased over the past four years, and the adult storefront says its redesign “reinforces the platform’s dedication to making adult gaming more inclusive.”
“When we look closer at the new players coming to our platform, we’ve seen a growth in female gamers from 6% in 2015 to 21%, as well as in LGBTQ+ gamers from less than 1% in 2015 to 6% after launching our new LGBTQ+ section in December,” Nutaku Communications Manager Julie Hall said in the press release. “This called for implementing some new features to provide the best gaming experience for all of our users today and going into the coming years.”
Nutaku will start an open beta for its new redesign “within several weeks,” according to the site’s podcast. Users will be able to give feedback via the site’s official Discord.
Despite MindGeek’s controversial relationship with sex workers and adult creators, Nutaku is one of the biggest 18+ retailers in the games industry. During the site’s first official Nutaku Developer Conference, the company announced that its publishing arm Nutaku Publishing invested $10 million into adult game development studios. Earlier this summer, the site also launched a $5 million investment portfolio for LGBTQ+ porn games.
Update 8:20pm CT, Aug. 22: Nutaku’s public relations and marketing lead Erica Z told the Daily Dot that Nutaku’s userbase reached 35 million thanks to the site “launching immersive titles,” “working to adapt to an expanding demographic,” creating the Nutaku Android Store, and opening the LGBTQ+ games section. After the Daily Dot asked about Nutaku’s future plans for queer players, she referenced the company’s $5 million investment initiative to “onboard more inclusive titles” and “create inclusive versions of [the storefront’s] already existing popular titles.”
Additionally, Erica Z said the site’s female player base has a wide range of interests that cannot be limited to just one adult games category.
“The growth in Nutaku’s female demographic may be attributed to factors like the platform’s increased offerings [to] play both as male and female in certain titles,” Erica Z said. “Nutaku’s female gamers are equally interested in both M/M and F/F titles—the preferences really vary across the board!”
Erica Z also hinted that Nutaku has plans for publishing adult games statistics, not unlike Pornhub Insights. “We’re definitely in talks about it when we start to roll out the redesign,” she said. “Stay tuned!”
