A North Carolina woman has reportedly received a total of $3.2 million in a case against her ex-husband and his partner that included allegations of revenge porn.
Elizabeth Ann Clark of Fayetteville, North Carolina, had made accusations of libel and revenge porn, as well as “alienation-of-affection” which is a legal term to describe an outsider who breaks up a marriage, the Fayetteville Observer reported on Monday.
The verdict was delivered on Monday. Clark’s ex-husband Adam Matthew Clark and his partner, Kimberly Rae Barrett, were ordered to pay separate amounts to Clark that culminated in a total of $3.2 million.
According to the Observer, the Clarks had been married since 2010. Adam Clark, an Army major, started having an affair with Barrett, an Army lieutenant colonel, in 2016, according to Elizabeth Clark. The libel charges were placed because Adam Clark claimed in an online post that Elizabeth Clark had herpes and an eating disorder, which she says are lies.
He also posted on Facebook a topless photo that Elizabeth had shared with him when they were in a consensual sexual relationship. He shared the photo on kink dating app Kik, as well.
Adam Clark is also facing misdemeanor charges for stalking and cyberstalking Elizabeth Clark. Barrett, who is a physician, is being investigated for “using her position to influence childcare and accessing the medical records of the Elizabeth Clark and her children,” according to Complex.
The jury asked Adam Clark to pay $2 million to his ex-wife, and Barrett was ordered to pay $1.2 million, Complex reported. For the revenge porn, Judge Mary Ann Talley attributed a further charge of $10,000 on Adam Clark payable to Elizabeth Clark.
Elizabeth Clark, who told the Observer she was confident she would win the case, said she’ll use the money to care for her two children, especially her 5-year-old, who is autistic. She also said she hopes this case can prevent other former spouses from bullying their ex-partners.
According to the Observer, this was the first revenge porn case to reach a jury verdict in North Carolina.
