Shopping for clit vibrators and other adult toys can be overwhelming, and not only for consumers. Marketing and advertising sex toys can also have its fair share of roadblocks. Especially now that more buyers are doing their shopping online, companies are left having to figure out how to work around the ever-hostile search environment surrounding sex toys. In some countries, the import or sale of sex toys is still prohibited and delivery carriers are hesitant to partner. Even here in the US, advertising adult toys on social media channels is heavily restricted, most sexual health products are outright banned from promotion on marketing tools like Google AdWords, and there are still some pretty weird laws around sex in almost all 50 states.
That said, sex toys have already proven to be a multi-billion dollar market that is expected to continue growing until at least 2026. So even with the difficulties navigating the online shopping sphere, sexual health and wellness companies are managing to get products out on the invisible internet shelves and into people’s virtual shopping carts––but how are they doing it? With design innovation.
Shoppers already know that they have a ton of toy options, from vibrators resembling tiny and strangely minimalistic UFOs to realistic silicone dildos and jumbo personal massagers with various attachments. The only category of vibe that seems to be lacking is the one that’s as aesthetically-pleasing as it is anatomically.
That was until Obii hit the market, anyway. As the first product from Biird, a new sex toy company based in Rotterdam, this clit sucking vibe is as cute as can be and it actually gets. the. job. done! After being in development for over a year, Obii ran into the same restrictions that many other sex toy companies face. Which, according to the creators, is how Obii really developed. “We needed a product that was first and foremost about delivering pleasure but it needed to be smart to get around draconian advertising restrictions,” they say. The solution is brilliant.
What is the Obii clit vibrator?
Obii is the new vibe in disguise, laying the taboo sex industry bare for all to see. While Obii is most definitely a vibrator, the geniuses over at Biird.co decided to give it a little upgrade for advertising purposes (winning a Red Dot Design Award in the process) and launched Obii: the Mood Lamp and Clitoral Massager.
“If you are here for the lamp, visitors simply switch the toggle on the site to ‘SFW,’ to see Obii, the mood light, where its charging base glows softly and reflects off the protective case to create a relaxing ambiance and atmosphere,” the copy reads. “However, if fans have nothing to hide and prefer to explore pleasure in a less restrictive way, the switch can be flipped to reveal the ‘NSFW’ mode showing Obii, a clitoral massager.” Obii is made to resemble a tiny bird and is available in three of the cutest pastel colorways: mint green, bubblegum pink, and Biird yellow.
How does this discreet vibrator work?
After a few weeks of playing with the Obii, I can honestly say that I’m pleasantly surprised with the punch this cute little bird-shaped vibe packs. The packaging was clean and discreet, and upon unboxing, the charge time was around an hour and a half. After taking the whole thing out of the box, I almost squealed (okay, I did squeal) at the little lamp base that also charges the device. When the Obii sits in its nest to charge, it’s by far the most aesthetically pleasing vibe I have ever seen. I feel fully confident that I could leave this out on the coffee table and not worry about anyone ever saying anything more than “Cool lamp!”
In its play mode, Obii has two pleasure points: the suction pad at the top, and the ribbed vibrations all along the body of the toy. In my opinion, what this toy really excels at is its suction capabilities. Even though it may only have three settings and one pattern delivering deep rumbly vibrations, Obii’s new pressure wave technology sends waves deep into the internal structure of the clitoris. So after enough fooling around, you’ll know just how to control the suction (and its placement) to get you orgasming within 30 seconds on the first setting.
The body-safe silicone and bulky-ish body of the toy don’t allow for the most simple placement, (warning: you may have to switch hands to prevent cramping) but it does muffle the powerful vibrations! So while this is feature totally puts the “discrete” in “discrete vibrator” it also means that when used on its side as a regular vibe, it’s not as powerful as you may imagine (especially when compared to its suction capabilities). That aside, I don’t know what kind of witchcraft the creators at Biird have practiced, but the Obii clit-sucking vibrator is no joke. I know everyone’s sweet spots are different and some take a little more coaxing than others, but its suctioning strength takes clitoral stimulation to an entirely new universe.
Aside from the fact that it got me off quicker than any other toy I’ve tried, there are so many other things that I love about this toy! For one, it is actually whisper-quiet, so much so that even on the highest settings you won’t have to worry about the sound seeping through the walls. The cover that completes the nest look also serves as a clever way to keep the toy clean when you’re not using it, and the super-soft silicone material makes it super easy to sanitize. Another huge plus is that it’s still petite enough to use with a partner and will fit in between bodies quite nicely without requiring specific positions.
Is Obii worth it?
While the Obii definitely exceeded my expectations, there are a couple of things I wish I could change.
Currently, the Obii isn’t completely waterproof. It’s safe to be rinsed and washed with water and water-based toy cleansers but it’s not designed for baths, showers, or swims. Hopefully, the Obii 2 is? Please! Lastly, I might be getting greedy, but I really wish you could access the vibration and clit-sucking settings simultaneously. Other than those two qualms, I love my Obii (and so do dozens of other reviewers).
Available for the early bird price of $89 on the company’s website, this vibe has stolen the show. Excuse me while I chill in my properly mood-lit apartment and never come out again!
